Ship recycling

Ship recycling

Recycling of ships is the process where an obsolete vessel structure is dismantled for disposal or recycling of materials and components. The recycling process can be conducted at a beach, pier, dry dock or dismantling slip. Recycling is a challenging process, due to the structural complexity and the many environmentally, safety and health issues involved. It should be noted that, in the process of recycling ships, virtually nothing goes to waste. The materials and equipment are almost entirely reused. The main challenges are mainly awareness and capabilities related to health, safety and environmental issues at the recycling yard and the transboundary movement of hazardous materials.
